Sering Modou Njie, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, and members of the Development Partners Group (DPG) at the United Nations House in Banjul. The session, convened by the DPG and co-chaired by Mr. Karl-Frederick Paul, UN Resident Coordinator in The Gambia, and H.E. Klaus Botzet, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to The Gambia, provided a valuable platform to exchange views on regional developments, security trends, development financing, youth empowerment, and sustainable cooperation. Discussions also highlighted the importance of regional stability, South-South cooperation, innovative financing, private sector engagement, and continued investment in education, skills, entrepreneurship, and employment creation for young people. TiKA The Gambia Office appreciates the Ministry’s constructive engagement and remains committed to working with partners in support of The Gambia’s national development priorities.
TiKA organized the National Awareness and Capacity TiKA organized the National Awareness and Capacity Building Programme on Halal Standards and Quality Infrastructure in Banjul under the TiKA Quality Infrastructure Support Programme (KALDEP), in cooperation with OIC-The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC), the Turkish Halal Accreditation Agency (HAK) and The Gambia Standards Bureau (TGSB). Held under the theme “Fostering a Sustainable and Internationally Recognized National Halal Quality Infrastructure in The Gambia,” the programme brought together public institutions, policymakers, sector representatives, academia, certification bodies, private sector actors, and relevant stakeholders. The opening ceremony was addressed by H.E. F. Türker Oba, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to The Gambia, SMIIC Secretary General İhsan Övüt, TGSB Director General Papa Secka, Deputy Permanent Secretary Abdoulie Jammeh from the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, and Dr. Ernest Aubee, Chairperson of the TGSB Board. Throughout the programme, SMIIC experts delivered technical sessions on OIC/SMIIC halal standards, halal food requirements, permitted additives and chemicals, traceability, conformity conditions, hygiene, storage and service requirements, as well as certification, accreditation, assessment procedures, and international recognition mechanisms. Through this initiative, TiKA aims to support The Gambia in strengthening its halal quality infrastructure, enhancing certification and accreditation capacity, increasing consumer confidence, facilitating trade, improving the investment environment, and strengthening the competitiveness of Gambian products and services in the global halal market.

TiKA The Gambia Office continues its efforts to st TiKA The Gambia Office continues its efforts to strengthen the capacity of emergency healthcare services in The Gambia through the Emergency Medicine Capacity Building Programme (ATKAP). Launched in 2021 in cooperation with the Ministry of Health of The Gambia and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Türkiye, the programme focuses on strengthening local emergency response capacity through sustainable training models. As part of the 2026 implementation cycle, the Introduction to Emergency Response Training (ADG+) was delivered at Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital by Gambian doctors who had previously completed the programme under the training of trainers model. Medical training equipment provided by TiKA also contributed to ensuring the continuity and local ownership of the programme. A total of 22 emergency medicine personnel received both theoretical and practical training covering emergency response, basic life support, trauma management, disaster preparedness, and crisis teamwork. Through ATKAP, TiKA aims to strengthen the human resource capacity of emergency healthcare services, improve case management skills, and enhance rapid, effective, and coordinated responses during critical situations. By prioritizing local capacity building and sustainability, TiKA The Gambia Office continues to support the strengthening of The Gambia’s healthcare system through long-term cooperation in the health sector.
TiKA The Gambia Office received representatives of TiKA The Gambia Office received representatives of the Students Revolving Loan Scheme (SRLS), established under the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology to expand equitable access to higher and tertiary education through student loans. During the meeting, the SRLS team shared information on the Scheme’s mandate, institutional background, and future plans as it moves toward implementation. The discussion provided a valuable opportunity to exchange views on access to higher education, student support mechanisms, and potential areas of cooperation in line with The Gambia’s education development priorities.

Bu çalışmada, klasik üç unsurlu devlet tanımının göçebe siyasi örgütlenmeleri açıklamakta yetersiz kaldığını Asya Hun Devleti örneği üzerinden tartışıyorum. Hunların sabit sınırlara dayanmayan, ancak askeri, ekonomik, diplomatik ve kurumsal açıdan gelişmiş özgün bir devlet modeli oluşturduğunu savunuyorum. Makalenin ilgili literatüre katkı sunmasını dilerim. ----------------------------------------- My new article, “Moving Beyond the ‘Shadow Empire’ Debate: A Distinct State Model in the Asiatic Huns,” has been published in the 2026/1 issue of Avrasya Etüdleri as part of my doctoral research. The article discusses, through the case of the Asiatic Hun State, the limits of the classical three-element definition of the state in explaining nomadic political organizations. It argues that the Huns developed a distinct state model that was not based on fixed territorial borders, yet was advanced in military, economic, diplomatic, and institutional terms. I hope it will contribute to the relevant literature.

TiKA established a major Vocational Training Centre at Mile II Prison, The Gambia’s largest correctional facility, creating a practical learning space for inmates preparing for life after release. The handover and first graduation ceremony was honoured by the presence of Hon. Baboucarr Ousmaila Joof, Minister of Defence of The Gambia, and Hon. Prof. Pierre Gomez, Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology. Attending the ceremony on behalf of H.E. President Adama Barrow, Hon. Minister Joof personally read the President’s message of appreciation to TiKA for its contribution to The Gambia’s development priorities. The centre will provide hands-on training in solar energy and electrical installation, construction, masonry, reinforced concrete foundation works, plumbing, tailoring, sewing, hairdressing and basic personal care services. This is more than a skills centre. It is an investment in rehabilitation, dignity, employability and safer communities. TiKA will continue to support people-centred development cooperation in The Gambia.
TiKA successfully implemented the “Zero Waste on C TiKA successfully implemented the “Zero Waste on Campus Project at the University of The Gambia”, marking a key step in advancing environmental awareness and sustainable waste management practices among youth. The project was launched at a ceremony attended by H.E. F. Türker Oba, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to The Gambia, along with university leadership including Prof. Ousainou Sarr, Dean of the School of Education, Prof. Lamin K. M. Fatty, Dean of the School of Agriculture, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Malang Fanneh, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, as well as academic staff, students, and media representatives. Under the project, recycling containers, waste separation units, and collection equipment were installed across the university campus. These interventions aim to enable waste separation at source, improve campus cleanliness, and establish a systematic and sustainable waste management culture within the institution. This initiative forms part of TiKA’s broader 2026 Zero Waste Programme in The Gambia, which follows a structured, multi-level approach. After the Zero Waste Workshop Project in Gambian Schools, implemented at Gunjur Senior Secondary School and Türkiye Maarif Foundation Schools, the university component represents the second phase of the programme. A third phase is planned at Bijilo Nature Park, where zero waste stations will be established to promote environmental protection and responsible waste practices within a natural ecosystem. Through these complementary interventions across schools, higher education institutions, and public natural areas, TiKA The Gambia Office continues to promote environmental responsibility, recycling culture, and sustainable development, contributing to long-term behavioral change within society.

The meeting brought together H.E. F. Türker Oba, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to The Gambia and the Yunus Emre Institute – Banjul. Discussions focused on potential areas of cooperation aligned with national priorities, particularly in health, environment, and intercultural exchange. The meeting provided a constructive platform to explore joint initiatives, partnerships, and possible funding mechanisms, with several promising areas of collaboration already taking shape.

The project was officially launched at Gunjur Senior Secondary School with the participation of H.E. Fatoumatta Bah Barrow, First Lady of the Republic of The Gambia, H.E. F. Türker Oba, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to The Gambia, school leadership, local representatives, teachers, and students. The program began with an apple tree planting ceremony, emphasizing environmental responsibility, long-term sustainability, and awareness of food security. As part of the event, a message from First Lady H.E. Emine Erdoğan, shared on the occasion of International Zero Waste Day 2026, was presented, highlighting the global challenge of food waste and the importance of behavioral change in environmental policy. In her remarks, First Lady Fatoumatta Bah Barrow underlined the significance of sustainable consumption and waste management, noting that nearly 1 billion tons of food is wasted globally each year, and emphasizing the importance of the principles: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Compost. As part of the project, hands-on Zero Waste and recycling trainings will be delivered to students at Gunjur Senior Secondary School and Maarif Schools in Banjul. These sessions will cover waste separation at source, recycling processes, environmental cleanliness, sustainable consumption habits, and creative reuse of materials. This initiative represents the first phase of a broader Zero Waste program in The Gambia. Upcoming components include the establishment of Zero Waste stations at the University of The Gambia Faraba Campus and environment-focused waste management points at Bijilo Nature Park. Through this multi-layered approach, TiKA The Gambia Office continues to contribute to environmental education, community awareness, and sustainable development, ensuring that Zero Waste principles are embedded early and translated into long-term behavioral change across society.

During the meeting, ongoing and planned Zero Waste initiatives were shared. The exchange took place in a warm and constructive atmosphere, reflecting strong mutual interest in advancing environmental cooperation.
I had a truly meaningful reminder of why our work I had a truly meaningful reminder of why our work matters. After experiencing a health problem, I went to the hospital for treatment. While speaking with the nurse, TiKA came up in our conversation. He immediately said, “I know TiKA.” Curious, I asked how. He took out his phone and showed me a certificate. To my surprise, the nurse taking care of me was Saikou Manneh, one of the health professionals who successfully completed the Emergency Medicine Capacity Building trainings provided by TiKA in 2021. It was a powerful moment. As TiKA The Gambia Coordinator, I found myself being cared for by someone who had once benefited from a TiKA supported training programme. What makes this even more meaningful is that these trainings have now become sustainable. Thanks to the Gambian trainers we helped train, the programme continues locally, while our support with equipment also goes on. This is exactly what development cooperation should mean: building local capacity, ensuring continuity, and seeing the impact return to the community in unexpected and deeply personal ways. For us, this is more than a coincidence. It is a clear sign of TiKA’s lasting impact in the field.
